About Swing Dancing
Swing is a group of many dances, most of which evolved in the 1920's to 1940's in conjunction with big band and jazz music. These dances include a huge range of tempos and styles, and use many elements such as rhythm, footwork, partner connection, musicality, body movement, and solo dancing. There are also components of showmanship and gymnastics that show up more in performance and competition. As such, it's hard to give a short definition of swing dancing that actually encompasses all the possibilities that are involved!
Swing Dance Styles
"Swing" is a group of several dances, many of which can be mixed together on the same dance floor depending on the song. Here are a few of the styles.
- Lindy hop ~ Widely considered the foundation of all swing dancing, adapts to most speeds of music and has the flexibility to use almost any footwork patterns
- Charleston ~ Energetic and involves a lot of kicking motions, done to faster music
- Blues ~ As varied as blues music itself, but often focused on connection and expression
- Balboa ~ Closed position with very small movements and intricate footwork, suitable for very fast music
- East Coast Swing ~ Simplified subset of lindy hop, done in 6 counts and fits well with "modern" swing music
- West Coast Swing ~ Smoother more upright style, danced in a slot (line) to a variety of music
Swing Dance Ettiquette
Swing dance culture can be different than the culture of other types of dances. Here are things to keep in mind.
- Asking people to dance ~ Don't be shy, ask everyone! Swing dancers are friendly people and will almost always say "yes" if asked for a dance.
- Saying no to a dance ~ You might feel it is necessary to refuse a dance on occasion. In that case, it's not rude to do so, but try to dance with the person later if possible.
- Safety on the floor ~ Dancers should be aware while they dance. Leads, be careful where you send your follow. Aerials (throws) are not safe to be done socially.
- In general ~ Really, swing dancing is all about having fun and being social. There are very few rules and expectations. Just come hang out and enjoy yourself!
